    Art Notebook- work in process

    Art Notebook- work in process

Thoughts on my work. I recently felt compelled to cut up my abstract paintings into 12x12 inch squares. I put them in a stack and they transformed into a sculpture. The earliest paintings were from 1998 and the newest were created in 2015. Approximately 42 paintings deconstructed and reconstructed. I realized that destruction and transformation are recurring themes in my work. Before I cut up my paintings into smaller squares, I cut them off of their stretcher bars and hung t

    Running interference- new paintings

This is the title of my new series of work. The title has a couple different meanings. First, it is based on the specific type of paint I use. It is called ‘interference’ paint. “An Interference color is laminated mica pigment that “flip-flops” from a main color to a weak complimentary one. The phenomenon is similar to naturally occurring light interferences such as gas or oil on water, or a butterfly wing. The position of the viewer and the direction of the light source crea
There is nothing like working in the studio!!

There is nothing like working in the studio!!

I consider myself very lucky. I have most everything I could have ever dreamed of. I get to wake up ever morning walk a few feet and paint. I look up at my 30 foot wood slat ceilings every day and thank the universe for giving me this life. (Ok enough of the mushy stuff!) I am sure most people (especially creatives) can relate to this. I go through such roller coaster days of motivation and  inspiration. Some days I just have nothing in me at all to work. Other days, I start

Painting, patterns, progress and admiring Gerhard Richter

I have been painting!!! I mean really painting. It feels great. I haven’t painted like this in about 3 years. I have done small stuff like my “Hiding in Plain Site” series and the Avatars and I have also done Mixed media work, but this is different. This is on canvas. I know, it shouldn’t make a difference but it does. I am so excited about this new direction. I am diverging from my usual color palette into something a bit more subdued. While I say that, I look at the paintin
    Wherefore ‘Art’ thou?

    Wherefore ‘Art’ thou?

Art? What art? Anything new you ask? Nada. Zip, zilch, nada. I have tons of ideas in my head, written down on various pieces of paper around my studio, but nothing tangible. Nothing physical to show for it. I know, I know… I KNOW, that I need to work. I just need to create. I don’t know what is stopping me. Work, money, life? Why am I procrastinating? Where is my motivation, my inspiration? I need to clean my studio. Oh wait, is that a form of procrastination? Hmmmm I am kind

    Binge and Purge… the video!

The lovely Nina Camplin/Fuschia Nightfire filmed the whole 5+ hours of my first “Binge and Purge” performance/installation  in Second Life. She then edited that down to 25 minutes and then sped it up and added this way cool music. The Avatars on display… @Create:Fixate a one night art event in DTLA

I was honored to be invited to display the avatars at Create:Fixate a one night art event in Downtown LA last night. It was a fun night of art, music, drinks and friends. I hung out by the Avatars and decided to take photos of the people taking photos with them. It was an interesting experience. I wanted to jump out of my skin every time someone grabbed their boobs!!! There were signs saying don’t touch… but alas people still did!! I almost feel violated!! Geesh!!! All in all

    On being an artist…

    On being an artist…

Last night I had a lovely evening with my artist friend Jennifer. We went to a few openings and had a great Italian dinner. The best part  of the evening was talking about what it means to be an artist. I don’t mean the talent or creativity or inspiration, although I guess in a way I do, but about the other stuff. The studio visits, trying to get into shows and galleries, supporting other artists, jealousy and self confidence or lack of. Being an artist is hard work. I have t
The end of an era… or… new beginnings?

The end of an era… or… new beginnings?

It  kind of depends on whether you think the cup is half empty or half full as to what you think of my latest virtual performance/installation. Yes, I deleted my entire inventory in Second Life. Or what I was allowed to delete. Turns out I can’t delete my library or calling cards. Well I can delete calling cards, but they just show up again because I still have those friends on my list. AND I am NOT deleting my friends!!! This past Sunday,  I finished the performative aspect

This last weekend I opened my studio for the 3rd time for the Brewery Artwalk. As always it was such an amazing experience. I am now the President of the Brewery Artwalk Association!!! Because the holidays are close at hand and in post-Artwalk/inventory clearance fashion, I have decided to hold a weekend only sale. GO BIG OR GO HOME!!

    GO BIG OR GO HOME!!

So, remember a couple days ago when I said I was going to grow out my hair? It was already getting a bit longer, ok it was only 1/2 an inch, but still, long for me. Why not continue to let it grow? Why not go back to when I had longer hair? This whole hair thing is an every-changing, ongoing process. I keep trying to figure  out what it means. Why did I shave my head in the first place. I am pretty impulsive after all. I wanted to make a statement about body image, my frustra
    Why I wear a wig…

    Why I wear a wig…

The last couple of art events I have gone to, I have warn a bright pink wig. I bought the wig a year and a half ago and thought it would be fun to play with. It sat alone untouched for over a year until a friend came over and saw it and wanted to photograph me wearing it. I put it on along with a super cool hat I bought from the Tim Burton exhibit at LACMA and I was transformed. I thought it was total fun and imagined having my real hair like this. Alas, I am not able to do t
    Falling asleep in my chair…

    Falling asleep in my chair…

I was  just talking to a friend, like 2 minutes ago about falling asleep in our chairs in front of the computer. His excuse is he has a son who as he puts it “adds a whole new layer of exhaustion to -why- you are falling asleep in the chair (and more than not you can’t take a nap because they’ll burn the house down.)” So ok, I will give him  that. My excuse? Well, this is what I have going on; I am social media manager for the Brewery Artwalk Association I am helping put toge
“88 are better than one”… or “Have no fear?”

“88 are better than one”… or “Have no fear?”

Last night I was thinking about what it means to be brave. Or rather what it means to be afraid. I have received quite a few comments from people calling me brave for the art I do. Brave for how I put myself out there to the world. Brave for letting go and opening up. In reality, I am pretty afraid. I am afraid of being forgotten. I am afraid of being left out. I am afraid of death. I am afraid of rejection and abandonment. I am afraid no one likes me. I am afraid I am stuck.
