Day 22 of Project 365: Yesterday

Yesterday I took a photo, but forgot to post it. I worked all day 7am-7pm in the Emergency Room. While I can now say, it was a very good day at work, quiet (Yes that Q word) It was also very somber. We had a TV on with news of the horrible horrible sadness that came out of Connecticut. On the verge of tears all day, it was very hard not to cry. I felt I couldn’t. I had to be strong and do my job. I am so proud to work with the amazing Doctors, Physician Assistants, Nurses, EMT’s, my fellow Monitor Techs, registration clerks, Housekeeping, dietary, Respiratory therapists, Cardiologists, Xray techs, Lab techs, security, firemen and paramedics. We work as a great team to  help every single patient that comes to us for help. Whether for lacerations, heart attacks, gunshot wounds or mental health issues, we are there for them.

While the media go around making excuses for what happened yesterday, I don’t know  if  there are any answers. What if there was a ban on guns? What if we had better access to mental health help? What if… What if… What if…

Today, a friend posted this amazing link on Facebook. I finally had the cry I needed yesterday. While it was for those 28 beautiful people who  lost their lives, it was also for those teachers and everyone who helped get the rest of the  children out safely. This quote has been  going around by Mister Rogers, “When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’ To this day, especially in times of ‘disaster,’ I remember my mother’s words and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers – so many caring people in this world.”
