So I have gotten a lot of mixed reactions to my shaved head. Ok buzzed for all you pc people…LOL It’s been interesting to watch people look at me. Some are quiet and don’t say anything, while others ask why I did it. This is what I tell them.
I’m an artist and my work is about continuing the conversation on body image, media’s distortion of beauty and self confidence. Our hair holds such symbolism of our physical beauty. The media makes it seem negative if a woman shaves her head or cuts her hair short. By removing my hair I am saying that our hair, my hair, doesn’t define me. I am beautiful with long hair, short hair or no hair. I am beautiful as an overweight woman with a big nose and crossed eyes. I am beautiful as me. I am tired of seeing one idea of beauty perpetuated in the media. I want this to stop. I am doing this for every man or women who feel they need to conform to the latest fad or hair style or the newest fashion to ‘fit’ in or be accepted. Every woman who feels they need to lay in a tanning bed to impress a guy. The only person you need to impress is yourself. Be the real you. Find the authentic, natural, beautiful you. For you!
