=== VB15 – GRACIE / KRIS ===

in an encore performance for the Odyssey Performance Art Festival

Saturday July 9 – 4pm slt SLT

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

ARTIST GRACIE KENDAL AND THE VANEEESA BLAYLOCK COMPANY EXPLORE A WOMAN’S RELATIONSHIP WITH HER AVATAR

the human body has been represented in painting and sculpture for 500 years

but always mediated by the artist’s hand

so we present the body (avatar) as a work of sculpture / installatIon

directly to the audience…

and in a world where avatars are emerging as new citizens, we state “I Rez Therefore I Am”

that presenting the avatar is a work of sculpture, and a declaration of instantiaiton / identity…

in Gracie’s journey she explores the “realism” of her physical persona

and the “romanticism” of her virtual self-identity…

and in VB15 we present the multiplicity of those identities

as a moment of Temporal / Spatial conflux

where they all manifest as a major sculptural presence for the audience

and their own multiple identites and life personas to consider…

~Vaneeesa Blaylock

In VB15 on July 9th 2011, Gracie will offer 16 avatars, 16 variations of identity, 16 life possibilities, for the audience to consider in this performance where the body is presented directly before the audience, unmediated by the brush of the painter or the lens of the photographer.

Gracie Kendal, also known as Kristine Schomaker in real life, just completed her Thesis for the Masters Degree in Art with the execution of her “My Life as an Avatar” http://www.graciekendal.wordpress.com where she utilizes installation, text, photography, mixed media, video and performance to explore her real life through the lens of her second life avatar.

“I am projecting myself onto another form and confronting my own imperfections,” Kendal says.  “My work deals with the process of becoming self-aware while living in a media-saturated, technologically advancing society.”

“The human body has been represented in painting and sculpture for 500 years, but always mediated by the artist’s hand,” Company Director Vaneeesa Blaylock said.  “In a world where avatars are emerging as new citizens, we will present the avatar as a work of sculpture directly to the audience. We state ‘I Rez, Therefore I Am.'”

For over 12 years, she has been experimenting with various interdisciplinary art forms including using online virtual worlds and social networking technologies to connect with international audiences and local arts communities. Gracie’s current work explores notions of online identity, specifically the construction of Avatars. Her work as a whole stands as an allegory of the relationship between appearance and identity, illusion, belief and reality. Two projects she is presently working on include, “My Life as an Avatar: The Gracie Kendal project” and “1000 Avatars” a contemporary anthropology of portraits of avatars in the virtual world of Second Life.
